GIFFA: Evolving Objectives

For some time now, one aim of  GIFFA was to have a regular game every day of the week (other than possibly Friday).  The idea was that for any day of the week, there was a game available, if you were keen to play and put your name down early enough.

From November 2008 onwards, we usually had at least one game a night from Monday to Thursday each week.  By August 2009, we were having regular games on Saturday and Sunday evenings as well.

The alternative arrangements in October/November 2009 saw the number of regular games drop to as low as two – Tuesday and Sunday.   The Thursday night game has been more or less regular, but it took  a while to get the Wednesday and Saturday games going again, and a Monday night game has just been re-started on GIFFA.

There is not much scope to add more games before the end of the year – perhaps just one more.   I’ve previously considered the following:

I’m inclined to go with a 10 to 11 pm mid-week game, for those who work late. A Friday night may not be sustainable as people make other plans.  A Saturday morning game may be more trouble than its worth at the present time, with late withdrawals, late-coming and players not turning up, either due to waking up late or being out late the night before.

Anyway, I’ll only consider an additional game sometime in the second half of this year.

The increase in the number of games can be put down to the success of the “pooling effect”, as more players join our games.

However, as the current games are filling up quickly on the GIFFA Message Board, and there is limited scope to increase the number of games in the foreseeable future, I have no choice but to restrict further growth in the number of players.

I don’t want our regular players to be deprived of the opportunity to play because places are filling up too quickly.

From 11 July 2010 onwards, you will have to be registered as a member and logged in to put your name down for a game on the “Schedule” board.

Up to now, anyone could register as a member.  With immediate effect, I will need to approve new members.  Up to 11 July 2010, everyone who has played in a game before will be approved, so please register as soon as you can. We’ve had at least 299 players since September 2008,  but currently only 64 players who have registered on the message board.

The advantages of registering are also that:

  • You don’t have to tick the box to agree to ProBoards Terms of Service and fill in the security check each time you post.
  • When you are logged in, there is a “Quick Reply” box at the bottom of each thread that makes adding a post faster.

Registered members can continue to put names down for others, including non-members/guests. I can’t say how long beyond 11 July 2010 this will continue., but at least until the end of July.

You can continue to post as a guest on the other boards (Reports, Monthly Round Up, Player Lists and Queries, Suggestions, Information & Chat.  You can also start a thread on Queries etc as a guest.

The GIFFA slogan/tagline was “Why pay to watch?  Just play”.   However, I succumbed and subscribed on 31 May 2010 to the World Cup channels – not that I will be watching many games, but that if I want to watch a game, I can.

For now, the new GIFFA slogan or tagline will be “A game every day”.

At the end of this month (June 2010), everyone who has registered as a member on the message board but who has not played will be deleted as members.

Two weeks ago, when discussing representative games, I said:

We have a large pool of players, so anyone who is interested can arrange a match against another team, or between two GIFFA teams.

Please make separate bookings for any such representative games. Unless it is useful in starting up a new regular game, or in keeping an existing regular game going, I am not prepared to use a regular booking for representative games.

Yesterday, I received the following e-mail from Mark T:

    Hi Rajiv,

I trying to get more people to play on Saturday mornings @8am.
Would you able to help me create a new thread for this weekend? 26th June.
I can help out at the bookings either at kallang cage or planet sports.

I have created a separate board for “Other Games” under the “Games” category. Any registered member can create a thread on that board proposing other games. Please try to avoid a clash with regular GIFFA games.

Any regular who plays in any other game can also put up a report on the “Reports” board.

There is now a ProBoards app for iPhone. Click on the link to download it.

It should make it easier to put your name down for or withdraw from a game via your iPhone.

If the weeknight games continue to fill up, I’ll consider a 10 to 11 pm game sooner rather than later, probably mid-week (Wednesday night), at The Cage.

How about “More than just a game a day” as the new tagline for GIFFA?
