Monthly Round Up: March 2010

The tables for the number of games played and points are now only available as a Calc document.  It can be downloaded here.

As I no longer have the time, I will no longer be re-producing them as separate web pages.  The link to those pages in the right hand column has been removed accordingly.

The use of OpenOffice.org’s Calc is explained here. If you wish to view the document, you can download OpenOffice.org 3.2.0 for free from here.

There are 5 sheets in the document:

  • First sheet (Sheet 5) – Listing by number of games played over the past 6 months (up to 31 March 2010)
  • Second sheet (Sheet 4) – Listing by points over the past 6 months (up to 31 March 2010)
  • Third sheet (Sheet 1) – Details of games played over the past 6 months (up to 31 March 2010), computation for player of the month and total number of games played since 1 September 2008.
  • Fourth sheet (Sheet 3) – Alphabetical listing and computation of points.

The computation of points for the points table are explained here, except that:

  • “Votes” are now referred to as “bonus points”.
  • Everyone who comments on a game they played in gets an additional 0.2 bonus points.
  • Anyone who switches from the winning side to the losing side during the game in order to make the game fairer will get 0.5 bonus points.

From now on, apart from any other consequence discussed previously, anyone who, without good reason, fails to turn up and play the whole game after confirming for the game, withdraws at a late stage, or turns up very late, will lose 0.5 points.  This will apply from next week’s games onwards.

Playing well and participating in the right spirit count for much more than winning or losing.

The formula for the player of the month has been adjusted slightly – Total bonus points / (Number of games + 5).   The “+5” weights the formula in favour of those who play more games.

The “Fun” page has been revised to refer only to the player tables and the player of the month, in addition to the general aspects of the message board.

The reference to the Fantasy Leagues has been removed as there has been no follow up.

As voting in the player polls is still very low, for now, each player can vote twice. You have to be a registered member of the message board to vote.

I think u should make it compulsory for all registered members who particpated in the game to get them to vote. Another suggestion is to allow 3 votes for 3 best players of the game. Top player gets 3 pts, 2nd gets 2 pts and the 3rd best gets one.

        It’s all voluntary here. 🙂

The GIFFA message board is a standard template provided fee by ProBoards. Although it allows for multiple voting, I’m unfortunately not able to change it to allow each of the votes to carry different weight.

Anyway, it’s all for fun. Just commenting on the game gets you a small benefit. 🙂

I’m just trying to encourage greater participation on the message board, in particular, the reports. Like everything else, it takes time.
