An interesting England squad for the World Cup qualifiers this week:

    • 4 players from Manchester City – Gareth Barry, Joleon Lescott, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Wayne Bridge
    • 4 players from Manchester United – Michael Carrick, Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, Wes Brown
    • 3 players from Aston Villa – Emile Heskey, Gabriel Agbonlahor, James Milner
    • 3 players from Chelsea – Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, John Terry
    • 3 players from West Ham United – Carlton Cole, Matthew Upson, Robert Green
    • 2 players from Liverpool – Glen Johnson, Steven Gerrard
    • 2 players from Tottenham – Aaron Lennon, Peter Crouch

The remaining 3 players are from 3 other clubs – Paul Robinson (Blackburn Rovers), David James (Portsmouth) and David Beckham (LA Galaxy).

Of the 7 clubs with 2 or more players in the squad, 6 are currently in the top 7 in the Premier League – Chelsea (1st), Manchester United (2nd), Tottenham (3rd), Manchester City (4th), Liverpool (6th) and Aston Villa (7th).

Are they in the top 7 because they have more English internationals or do they have more English internationals because they are in the top 7?

On the other hand, West Ham, the remaining club with 2 or more players in the squad, are second from bottom.

Arsenal, currently lying 5th, do not have a player in the squad.
