Participants: 12 September 2009

Sat 12 September 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

The Participant List was approaching 200.

I’ve broken it down and simplified it as follows:

  • Current Participants –  All adults (21 and above) who have played in a FIOFAFI session at least once in the past 26 weeks, and for whom I have their nationality, year of birth, e-mail address and mobile number, and whom I have no reason to believe will not play again.  The period of 26 weeks is in keeping with the participation records and player table.
  • Overseas Participants – Anyone who would be a current participant but for the fact that they are currently overseas, and have not been able to play (even if it is more than 26 weeks).
  • Guests:
    • A – Any adult introduced recently, but has yet to play.
    • B – Other adults who have played in the last 26 weeks.  They are not under “Current Participants” because I do not have their nationality, year of birth or e-mail address, or I have reason to believe they will not play again.  Guests who participate regularly usually confirm for sessions through a current participant.
    • C – Anyone who last played more than 6 months ago, but less than 12 months ago.
    • D – Others who may be interested.  Anyone who was introduced some time ago, but hasn’t played yet, or anyone who played more than 12 months ago, but might wish to resume playing, or anyone who may have an interest in the blog and its activities.
    • E – Women interested in playing football and anyone interested in other sports.

Any current participant who asks to be removed from the mailing list, or who informs me they will not be playing again as they are leaving Singapore, have a long term injury, or have stopped playing football, will be moved to the Guests B section.  Any Guests B or C who asks to stop receiving e-mails will have their e-mail address removed the list.  Any Guest D or E who asks to stop receiving e-mails will be removed from the list completely.

Playing for the opposing side in a representative game doesn’t count as playing in a FIOFAFI session (unless you put your name down for the FIOFAFI team and were “loaned” to the other side because they were short of players).  Anyone who puts together a team to play against a FIOFAFI representative team, but doesn’t play in a regular FIOFAFI session goes under Guests D.

The above is now on Sheet 1 of the Excel sheet that can be downloaded here.

The listing of participants by age and introducer now only covers “Current Participants”.  The oldest current participant is 55.  The oldest to have played so far is Nick’s dad Tony, at 61.

After “Original”, the blog has now “introduced” most people – 12.  As has been the case since 1 April 2009, anyone who first played before 1 March 2008 is listed as “Original”.

The listing of participants by nationality includes overseas participants.  There are participants of 18 different nationalities.

The listing of clubs supported covers all participants and guests.   30 football clubs are covered. There has been a surge in Arsenal supporters in recent weeks.  The four clubs with the most supporters amongst our participants now as compared to 9 May 2009:

9 May 2009 12 Sep 2009
Club No. of supporters
Man Utd 27
Liverpool 9
Everton 3
Arsenal 2
Club No. of supporters
Man Utd 35
Liverpool 17
Arsenal 13
Everton 3

Support can be extended to any sports entity or person, with allowance for a first and second choice.  The one restriction is that the first and second choices cannot be football clubs playing in the same league.

Apart from the different treatment described above, only those in the “Current Participants” section will receive every “Heads”, “Tails” or “Toss”, the e-mail sent out once or twice a week to update participants on the places available and to summarize new stuff on the blog.  All other participants and guests will only receive 2 or 3 e-mails a month, provided that their e-mail addresses are shown as being “On File”.  Overseas participants don’t need to receive every e-mail as they can only play when they visit Singapore.

Even if you’re not receiving regular e-mails, you can still follow what’s going on through the Facebook group.  If those who are members of the group have a profile photo, you can also see what they look like, even if you haven’t met them or played in the same session as them before.

From this week onwards, participation information will be updated once a week, usually sometime after the Thursday night session and before the Saturday evening session.

To be added to the “Current Participant” section, you need to have played at least once in the last 26 weeks, and I need to be provided with your nationality, year of birth, e-mail address and mobile number.   The club you support and your occupation are optional.

E-mail addresses and mobile numbers do not appear on the Excel sheet and are kept separately by me.  On the Excel sheet, it is merely stated whether each person’s e-mail address or mobile number is “On file”.   A list of mobile numbers for current participants will be circulated to all current participants once a month.

I’ll refer to everyone by their usual or preferred first name or nickname.  Where two or more participants share the same or very similar first names or nicknames, I will distinguish them by the first initial of their surname.

The participant and guest information has been updated.

Sheet 2 of the Excel sheet shows others who have played.  Other than a few who have slipped through the cracks, almost everyone who has played since January 2008 but last played more than 12 months ago is listed.  There are currently 31 names on the list.

In total, at least 224 people have put their named down for and played in a FIOFAFI session since January 2008.

Nick and Ian were the original two Arsenal fans as at 9 May 2009. Lin Kang was added as a participant in May itself, Dan N in July.

The remaining 9 Arsenal fans have all been added since the start of August:

    • 5 weeks ago – AJ, Wei Wen
    • 3 weeks ago – Elvin, Jason D
    • Last week – Eam
    • This week – Toby, Alex T, Dan B, Fred

As they all came to join us through different routes, this recent sudden increase is entirely coincidental.

According to Fred in his e-mail to me on Tuesday, “like any other good Frenchman [he supports] Arsenal”.

Barry becomes our first Leeds United fan. Surprisingly, we haven’t had one before, at least amongst those I know.

The number of clubs covered is now 31.

Besides myself, the 31 are – Andy M, Azmi, Balach, Boris, Bret, Channou, Chris K, Clement, Damian Y, Dilesh, Dirk, Edardy, Gilbert L, Glenn, Gwen, Ian, Imran, Kevin, Ladi, Lukas, Luke, Mark L, Melvin L, Murray, Nicholas C, Nick, Philipp, Poh Keng, Reza, Yu Teik, Yuchi.

As for how participants and guests came to play in our sessions, we sometimes pick up new players from the venue itself when we’ve been short of players, for example, if they turned up but their game was cancelled, or they played earlier and are willing to play another hour, or they turn up in the hope of picking up a game.

I used to list the venues separately – Bukit Timah campus (Murray), Sports Planet (Franco), The Cage (Yuchi), and Turf City (Peter). I’ve merged them into one category of “Joined at venues” in the Introducer Ranking, but are identified separately in the full list itself.

This is distinct from the staff of the particular venues introducing new players to us.

The Participant Information has been updated for this week.

Barry, Tommy and Michael have been added under “Current Participants”.

Tommy is our first Dutch participant, bringing the total number of nationalities covered to 19.

Sajith and Sudhershen have been added under Guests B.

The female players from the mixed session on Tuesday have been added under Guests E.

Gordon and Kelvin have been added to the Participant List. Desmond O has been moved from Guests B to the Participant List.

Kelvin was introduced through the back-to-back representative games last Wednesday. Representative games are an additional way by which new players come to join us, so I’ve added it as a separate category in the Introducer Ranking.

Claudio and Alex W have been added to Guests B.

I received the following e-mail from Alex Z on Wednesday:

As I am now leaving Singapore, you may remove me from the [mailing] list.

…. [The game was] really nice although due
to work I didn’t get to play as much as I wanted.

I’ve moved Alex Z from the Participant List to Guests B.

As he was our only Greek player, the number of nationalities covered drops to 18.

To keep in step with the participation records and player table, which from now on will be updated midweek instead of Sunday, the participation information will be updated sometime after the Sunday session but before the re-scheduled “Weekly Round-Up” post, and will also cover new players and other changes between the previous Monday and Sunday.

Robbie has been added to Guests B.

Federico said his farewell on Saturday and has returned to Italy. I have moved his name to “Overseas Participants”.

I received the following reply to Monday’s “Heads”:

Thank you for your email to [Richard] with a subject of FIOFAFI Tails (Thursday, 1 October 2009)

Your email could not be delivered as the intended recipient is no longer at [firm].

I’ve moved Richard from Current Participants to Guests B.

    Tue 6 October 2009 at 9:32 pm

Andre and Eric have been added to the Participant List.

Andre is the first Brazilian on the Participant List with contact details.

Although several of Franco’s Brazilian colleagues played with us in January 2009, I never had their contact details.

Dan N e-mailed me yesterday as follows:

I have now returned to England so wanted to say thanks very much for all the footy. It’s an excellent establishment that you have created!

I copy in a friend of mine, Rob, who has moved out to Singapore for 4 months and may well be interested in some 5aside.

    Thanks very much once again.

I have moved him to the Overseas Participant list.

Marcus has been added to Guests B.

    Tue 13 October 2009 at 9:30 pm

Gordon called me on Sunday night to inform me that he is returning to China and is not sure whether or when he will be back in Singapore. He asked to be moved to the Overseas Participants list. Done.

Tim C has been moved from Guests C to the Participant List as he played again last Wednesday.

Kein Liang and Ian F have been added to the Participant List.

Alex W and Desmond O have been moved from Guests B to the Participant List as they have provided me with their details.

Kevin is now Kevin A to distinguish him from Kelvin (now Kelvin D). Likewise, Erik is now Erik H to distinguish him from Eric (Eric R).

I’ve moved current participants who haven’t played since 1 July 2009 to Guests B – Andy N, Garrett, Hairuddin, Heath, John W, Jujing, Mark T, Peter, Ronak and Steve B.

Playing against us in a representative game doesn’t count. 🙂

At the end of each quarter, I will move current participants who have not played in the last quarter to the Guests list unless I am informed why they have been unable to play.

      Thu 15 October 2009 at 10:14 am

Garrett and John W would in any event have dropped out of the Participant List as they haven’t played in the last 26 weeks.

Tommy has informed me that Alex W has left Singapore, so I’ve moved him to Guests B.

Kenneth C has been moved from Guests C to the Participant List after playing again. Kevin K, Uday and Matt B have also been added to the Participant List.

    Fri 23 October 2009 at 10:01 am

I will include nationalities, ages and clubs supported in the telephone list to be circulated today, to help distinguish between participants with similar names.

Anyone who takes over or makes a booking for the period from 24 October 2009 to 15 November 2009 can use the telephone numbers to fill the places for a game.

If you send out a mass SMS, I suggest you stick to those you know have played on that day of the week at that venue.

Only current participants are included in the list of 124. The 9 overseas participants are not included for obvious reasons. The 150 or so guests are also not included.

      Wed 18 November 2009 at 3:40 pm

The updated telephone list will be circulated next week. If you want to be included, don’t forget to e-mail me your details. Being included in the list gives you priority for the sessions that I co-ordinate.

I will also include anyone who registers as a member of the GIFFA Message Board on ProBoards to the Participant List.

The following have been added as guests – Andrew Y and Jeffrey.

I haven’t included those who played as follows as I don’t know who they are, who introduced them or any details:

Sunday, 1 November 2009 at Turf City – Jye’s friend

Saturday, 14 November 2009 at Sports Planet – Yazid

    Sunday, 15 November 2009 – Ian3, King, Matt3, Alvin, Christian

    Monday, 16 November 2009 – Sushil’s friend

Sunday, 29 November 2009 – Yeang, Stephen and Hur

Also, who is the Gabriel who has played the last two Tuesdays – 24 November 2009 and last night?

Alkaliq, Shawn and Florian added to Guest List. According to Poh Keng.

Florian looks and plays like Michael Ballack according to Ganesh. Both Gabriel and Florian are Kevin K’s friend

Two other new names – Barun and Wing Kong. Jye had provided me with their e-mail addresses earlier.
