Sunday Evening At Turf City: 23 August 2009

Sun 23 August 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

There were two sessions at Turf City this evening:

  • 6-a-side from 5.00 to 6.00 pm.
  • 8-a-side from 6.00 to 7.00 pm.

John L managed to bring three others (Zul, Bunpheng and Roslan) so we lined up as follows:

  • Whites: Sushil, Timmy, Jason D, Anthony, Rajiv, Roslan
  • Reds: Imran, Ron, John L, Gilbert G, Zul, Bunpheng

The session remained goalless for a while before Reds took a 2-0.  Whites were not putting away their chances, and although they pulled one goal back, Reds regained their two-goal lead at 3-1.

Whites were having a lot of the ball while Reds were dangerous on the break. It took a while before Whites pulled the score back to 3-3, only to fall 3-4 behind.  Whites equalized a game and the game was heading for a draw.

Sushil then pointed out that it was 6.00 pm and time for the second session.  While I was trying to confirm the time, Imran put a long-range effort past Sushil in goal, who was more concerned about starting the second session on time.

The ball was with Reds’ goalkeeper when Sushil first called time, so technically, the ball was dead when time was called.  I might have applied the rule more strictly, except that there was a second session to start.

Anyway, I’m recording the final score as 4-4. 🙂

The player poll is below.

After some controversy over line ups, the default line ups were:

  • Whites: Sushil, Azmi, Shankar, Timmy, Erik, Sunny, Ken, Balach
  • Reds: Imran, Rajseran, Ron, Yuchi, Damian Y, Gilbert G, Samuel, Bob

Whites had more of the possession and the chances, but Reds took their chances better and defended well.

Reds took an early lead before Whites came back to lead 2-1.  As Whites continued to have more of the game, Reds sneaked two goals to lead 3-2.  Whites pressed for an equalizer and had several shots go narrowly wide.

Reds broke away to score with the last kick of the game.  Final score:  Reds 4 Whites 2.

A clip showing Timmy scoring Whites’ first goal:

A second clip here.

Two good sessions. Not as contentious as some might feel immediately after the sessions. 🙂

It was bittersweet because I played well after below par performances on previous games but still my team lost. Most important however was to enjoy the game. Looking forward for next week’s game, and collect my jersey that I conveniently left on the table.

Actually before the match started , we have discussed with Sushil that we might swap some players if the game ends up one sided . The Whites look really strong compared to what he had .

Surprise Surprise that the Reds played well yesterday instead . Some neat passing and came close before Whites scored the first one courtesty from Timmy . We allowed too much space for him.

Reds got messy for awhile and some were out of position until when Rajseran had a ball with him and dribbled passed Shankar before shooting the ball through Sushil .

But the celebration lasted only awhile before Whites came back with the 2-1 lead.

Imran took a nice long shot but saw Sushil saving the ball but somehow the ball went up the air and landed at the back of him and eventually was another goal. That beats me how the ball ended up as a goal and there it was 2-2

The game went on with Whites having to attack at least 70% of the time until a neat pass from bob to Rajseran and Rajseran dummied the defenders by passing to Imran who was alone and made it 3-2 .

I was somehow predicting that the game will end up a draw or Whites might sneak another last minute victory until a counter attack by the reds and i ended up alone with the ball and took no time to make it 4-2 🙂 and that was the final goal and end of the game.

Nice game but again i am still surprise with the results. Bravo to the Reds yesterday .

I had a good time yesterday. Yeah the whites looked a lot stronger not just on paper but also on the pitch! But good that we decided to give it a try….whites were always threatening but Reds defended well as Raj said esp in a big pitch.

Always threatening from the Whites was of course Timmy with his shoot and score at any chance so much so that I devoted much time to just marking him being my only goal 🙂 Then there was the combination of Erik and Sunny upfront or wassit Ken? But they obviously played together before and it showed with some slick passing. Ron was outstanding in Goal! Hope u hv recovered from your injury Ron! And Sam and Sushil was really good in goal! And Shanker as usual very sturdy in Def! I felt that overall, the Whites had more domination in terms of possession and goal threat but somehow Whites defending and converting their chances when they had them won it over for them 🙂 Thats football eh?

On Reds side, Raj was especially good yesterday making the intelligent runs and scoring from a solo effort. So u got my vote Raj! Didn’t know u voted urself! Cheh! NOT SHY 🙂 heheh Imran also deserves mention as we did not have much of an attack. Without him marauding up front, we would hv been pinned back much of the time. Yuchi made some very critical tackles and def kept the scoreline down for us and Gilbert too in def. Sam gave it his all and I cld see he was chasing down the opponents and running his heart out 🙂 So Kudos to the Reds team yesterday. I am begining to see why football is football and teams like Real Madrid for eg. may not win everything there is to win! Alot counts in the teamwork and how a team gels together! 🙂

Hey Damian, you missed out the part where you were guarding Timmy, covering mid field a lot of the time (while I was hiding out front) and you were also moving up for the attacks. You need to take more shots on goal, you got a mean strike. As for Raj, you also got my vote bro… you controlled defense well and you also managed to score goals from two excellent build up plays.. I mean, you just had to tap the second goals past the keeper the way I set it up for you 😀 haha.. the first one was also OK…I’ll give it 8/10. 😛 Cheers to Ron for playing on with his injury… without him, Timmy, Erik and Azmi would have had a field day at our ‘D’… A lot of passion during the game but thoroughly entertaining session.. thanks guys!

What argument??? You were just telling me to be in position for the ball. It’s all cool bro. In all honesty, I guess I was just lazy to fall back as it was a second game for gilbert, sushil, ron, timmy and myself. Shortness of breath.. and I was finding it a little difficult to come back to cover from the mid fields, which I also did little to cover (the young steed is not what it used to be back in the times…) 😉

As the total number of votes for the 8-a-side session is improbable, votes have been discounted.
