OPSAGE: 9 August 2009

Other projects, sports, activities, games and events to participate in, watch or attend.

Objectives at our sessions can vary widely. There are those who take football very seriously.  Others are just looking for a regular run out in any sport.

For the latter, indoor football is more readily available, especially with a much wider interest in football compared with other sport, and the benefit of our “pooling effect”.

Individual sports such as tennis, squash or badminton may appear easier to play regularly as you only need one other person to play against.  On the other hand, you do need someone of roughly the same standard as yourself, and that’s not always easy to find.

It’s easier to find a fit in team sports – even if abilities vary widely, at a social level, it is possible to divide the players into two roughly equivalent teams.

For various reasons, I’ve looked at other team sports such as Cage cricket and floorball.  We didn’t have the numbers for Cage cricket, and floorball is for a separate group.  There was also an invitation from Philipp early in the year to join the German Dragons for their regular Saturday afternoon dragon boat training session.

One sport that was brought up a while ago is Ultimate.   On that occasion, Bobby said:

Anyone keen on a good workout can also check out Ultimate (frisbee) – a game I’ve grown to enjoy even more than football.

There’s a thriving Ultimate community in Singapore – check out their website:  http://www.singaporeultimate.com/

I happened to come across their website again during the week.   They have regular pick-up games at various locations where you anyone can just go along and join in.

According to Wikipedia:

While originally called Ultimate Frisbee, it is now officially called Ultimate because Frisbee is the trademark for the line of discs made by the Wham-O toy company. In fact, discs made by Wham-O competitor Discraft are the standard discs for the sport, because they are more streamlined and have a softer curved edge for easier handling. In 2008, there were 4.9 million Ultimate players in the US.

Anyone who’s interested in trying it out, add a comment below, or ask Bobby about the game.
