OPSAGE: 2 August 2009

Other projects, sports, activities, games and events to participate in, watch or attend.

We currently don’t have routine sessions on Friday nights, and I do not envisage scheduling any in the near future, but if anyone would like to play on Friday night, you could always canvass interest through the blog or SMS.  The latest telephone list will be circulated with the next “Heads” or “Tails”.

I believe pitches at our regular venues – The Cage, Turf City and Sports Planet – are readily available on Friday nights.  If there is sufficient interest, and a pitch is available, anyone can organize an impromptu Friday night game.  The contact numbers are:

  • The Cage – 63449345
  • Turf City – 64668211
  • Sports Planet – 93266635

Alternatively, I understand Melvin L plays regularly on Friday nights on the roof-top pitch at Royal Sporting House’s Wisma Gulab building on Macpherson Road.  If you’re keen to play, you could always ask him if there are places available.

We haven’t discussed a women’s session or a mixed session for a while now, but it has come up again recently:

  • Damian Y told me a few weeks ago that his wife and several of her friends who used to play for the Law Society’s women’s team would like to start playing again on a regular basis.
  • A couple of weeks earlier, I met one of my wife’s former colleagues who said she used to play at Sports Planet with her friends, but they don’t have enough players now.
  • After today’s session, Ace brought up that his wife is keen to play.

It might be worth trying to get a women’s session underway in the near future, perhaps at the weekend to start with.

If we are to have drinks to watch the FA Community Shield, someone suggest a venue.   Apart from Nick who first suggested drinks, Timmy has declared his interest.

    S. League results from last night:

    • At Hassanal Bolkiah National DPMM 1 Home United 6
    • At Tampines Rovers Stadium: Tampines Rovers 1 SAFFC 2

Home United’s 6-1 win over DPMM in Brunei was quite an upset. DPMM, winners of the Singapore League Cup in June, had been challenging for the title earlier in the season and are still fourth. Home United have spent the entire season so far in mid-table. They’ve now moved up to fifth, three points behind DPMM.

In the clash of the top two, SAFFC came out on top, to extend their lead to 8 points.

The league table can be found here.

    Other fixtures this week:

    • Tonight at Bedok Stadium: Geylang United v Albirex Niigata
    • Tonight at Yishun Stadium: Super Reds v Young Lions
    • Tomorrow night at Hougang Stadium: Sengkang Punggol v Gombak United
    • Wednesday night at Toa Payoh Stadium: Balestier Khalsa v SAFFC
    • Thursday night at Jalan Besar Stadium: Tampines Rovers v Home United
    • Friday night at Jurong West Stadium: Gombak United v Super Reds
    • Saturday night in Brunei: DPMM v Woodlands Wellington

Like I’ve said before, S. League fixtures are now included under the weekly “OPSAGE” post so that if anyone is interested in going to watch a game, they can add a comment below.

I sent the following e-mail to several people yesterday, including women I know to be interested and husbands who have told me their wives are interested:

A women’s session has come up again recently: ….

I have a second pitch from 5 to 6 pm on Saturday at Sports Planet @ East Coast, so if we get 10 to 12 women players, we could have a men’s session and a women’s session take place side by side.

    ….

    I’ll need numbers by Thursday.

Let’s see how much of a response I get. 🙂

Not enough interest, so the women’s session is cancelled.
