Tables & Line-Ups: 19 July 2009

The end-of-week rankings has been re-named end-of-week table, and will no longer be used to determine the following week’s line ups.  From now on, it is entirely for fun.

It is an average, to cater for the fact that the number of games played by each participant may vary greatly.   The total points will be accumulated over a rolling 26-week period – 2 points for a win, 1.5 points for a draw or a representative game, and 1 point for participation.

0.2 points will be added for each vote obtained in the player polls over the last 4 weeks, and from the last two 11-a-side games.  The total is then divided by the number of games played during that period plus 2.  The “plus 2” is a small weight that favours those who play more games, and prevents those who have only played once or twice from going straight to the top by winning their first couple games.

How line ups are to be decided has been in issue for a while now.  It would be better if a couple of the regulars who will be playing in a session decide the line ups between themselves.  Rajseran has taken on the responsibility for determining line ups for the FAFI game on Monday nights.

In using the rankings to decide the default line ups, I’d tried to avoid subjective assessments of individual players, leaving any subjective aspect to those playing, by way of player swaps.  The use of rankings can result in fairly arbitrary line ups, and player swaps have not been used to moderate that.  I’ve been adding other elements in deciding the line ups, but they have been limited in their effect.

To improve the quality of our routine sessions, the default line ups will no longer be based on rankings.

The default line ups will now be determined by pairing the players based on their attributes, in order of the value of those attributes in our routine sessions.

  • 1st pair – All rounders who can marshal their teams.
  • 2nd/3rd pairs – those who track back when their team loses possession.
  • remaining pairs – goal-scoring prowess or other attributes.

Experience will be given priority in filling the first few pairs.   The players will be divided into teams based on their recent form, so that each team has a mix of players who have been winning recent games and those who have been losing recent games.  Players who haven’t played before or for a while will also be split between the two teams.

To this end, results over the past 3 weeks has been added on the right hand side of Sheet 1 of the Excel sheet.  The result in the last game played is also shown separately, to cover those who haven’t played in the past 3 weeks.

Teams will also have a mix of ages and nationalities.

As we have a lot of participants, comments on individual performances will be very useful.  They can be expressed positively, for example:

  • “all-rounder”
  • “good at marshaling the side”
  • “tracks back”
  • “tackles well”
  • “good ball skills”
  • “scores goals”

The votes over the last five weeks are now included in the computation of the points for the table. This will be increased week by week over the next three weeks until it reaches eight weeks. It will then remain eight weeks, with earliest week being dropped as each new week is added.

As the weekly round-up includes the results of the player of the session/game for the session/games from the previous Saturday to Thursday, each of the weeks included in the computation of points for the table will also run from Saturday to Thursday.

The player poll votes for representative games, whether indoor football or 11-a-side, will be treated the same way from now on.

Where the losing side are seriously disadvantaged during a session, they’ll be awarded the equivalent of a draw bonus for the table.

From next week onwards, the result from the Sunday evening session will only be included in the following week’s table, so that I can update the table earlier in the weekend. Each weekend’s table will be updated to include:

    • The results from the previous Sunday to Saturday.
    • The player poll votes from the previous Saturday to Thursday. The votes from the Saturday itself will not be included until the following week to allow those who played more time to vote.

Where two or more players are equal on points, the one with more votes will be placed higher. If they are equal on votes, than the one who has played more games is placed higher. Previously, it was points and then votes, but those who play more games already benefit from the “+2” in the divisor.

The votes from the last 7 weeks are included. It will increase to 8 next week. It will remain at 8 after that with the earliest week’s votes being dropped each week as the latest week’s votes are added.

The webpage showing the top of the table now shows the top 70, about half of the 141 who have played since 1 April 2009. Most of those below the top 70 have only played 2 or 3 games at most.

The full listing and other details can be downloaded as an Excel document from the “Current Top 70” webpage.

The table now covers the last 8 weeks of voting. From next week onwards, it will be a rolling 8 weeks, as each week’s votes are included, the earliest week’s votes are dropped.

Where several participants recently introduced by one person play in a session, I have put them all in one team. This has happened twice now:

at The Cage on 11 August 2009 (Tuesday night).
yesterday’s evening session at Sports Planet.

The sides may not be as balanced as I have been endeavouring for them to be since abandoning line ups strictly based on rankings. So that the side comprising primarily of an introducer and his friends is not greatly advantaged or disadvantaged by having his friends playing on the same team, or in having the rest of the players on the other side (in a way, similar to a representative game or a challenge), it will be recorded in the table as a draw bonus for both sides.

The result of the first session mentioned above has been re-classified, so there is some adjustment to the table.

[…] On such occasions, it can end up as an introducer and those he introduced against the rest. […]

Where no result is reported for a session by the end of Saturday, the result will deemed to be a draw.

Where the total number of votes in the player of the session/game poll is improbable, for example, exceeding the total number of players, or those reliably known to vote, improbable votes will be discounted.
