Weekend Activity Revisited

In the first poll between 3 February 2009 and 26 March 2009, 59% were interested in activities at the weekend, while 41% voted for “Leave my weekends alone. Weekday night sessions are enough for me.”  For those who were interested in activities at the weekend, the preference was for Saturday or Sunday afternoons.  There was hardly any interest in Saturday or Sunday mornings or Sunday nights.

In the second poll between 29 March 2009 and today a clear majority preferred Saturday afternoon to Sunday afternoon.    The votes were even between a 4 pm and 5 pm start.

We’ve had four 11-a-side games now at the weekend, all but the first one on a Saturday afternoon.   We have another one for tomorrow.

However, not much of a response for another 11-a-side game on 16 May 2009.

We also had one 7-a-side game on a Saturday afternoon against Dennis’s team.  Dennis has come back to ask whether we’d like a re-match.  It is now proposed for 2 May 2009 at 5 pm, again at Turf City.

1 May 2009 is the Labour Day public holiday, so several of you may be away, but for those remaining in Singapore, would you be interested?

If you are, please indicate your interest or confirm as a comment below.

If there is sufficient interest, activity on a Saturday afternoon could become a regular thing.

We’ve got 3 for Saturday, 2 May 2009, 5 to 6 pm at Turf City. Another 4 or 5 more to form a team to face Dennis W’s team.

And anyone interested in another 11-a-side on Saturday, 16 May 2009? If it goes on, we’ll try to make it a 4 or 5 pm start. We might have left it too late already though to get the game on.

Numbers have been quite volatile for weekday night sessions so far this year. Apart from other commitments, illness and injury, having to work late is also a factor.

Starting with the regular session this Saturday, I’ll schedule regular sessions at the weekend from now on. The worst that can happen is that there are insufficient players confirmed, and the session is cancelled.

At least having to work late won’t ordinarily be a factor at the weekend.

Saturday afternoons at Turf City doesn’t appear to be popular with the Bukit Timah regulars, so for the reasons set out here, I’ll schedule a regular Turf City session on Sunday night instead.

I’ll try Sports Planet for the Saturday afternoon session. You can always make it part of bringing the family down to East Coast beach as well.

From next week onwards, there will be a separate post for weekend sessions, to be put up in the middle of the week. It will take a while to figure out preferences, and to firm up venues and times. At present, I am looking at Saturday afternoon, 4 to 5 pm, and Sunday evening, 5 to 6 pm, at Sports Planet and/or Turf City.

It’s hard to believe we didn’t have routine weekend sessions before May 2009.

We kick started routine weekend sessions with a representative game on Saturday, 2 May 2009, and had a routine session the following Sunday, 10 May 2009.

We’ve had a routine session every Sunday evening at Turf City since 24 May 2009 except:

    • 7 June 2009, as we had another representative game at Turf City in the evening of Saturday, 6 June 2009.

    • 28 June 2009, as we had an 11-a-side game on Saturday, 27 June 2009.

    • 26 July 2009, as we had a mini-tournament instead.

    • 20 September 2009, as the routine session was somewhat unfortunately cancelled on Hari Raya Puasa.

We have even managed two consecutive games/sessions on the Sunday evening at Turf City on the following occasions:

    • 12 July 2009, a representative game followed by a routine session.

    23 August 2009, a 6-a-side on a small pitch followed by an 8-a-side on a big pitch.

Apart from there being no session last Sunday, we have played on a big pitch every Sunday evening session since 23 August 2009, usually 8-a-side, but 7-a-side today. There was an earlier session on the big pitch on 2 August 2009.

Although a major factor in its conception was as an alternative to Monday nights at Turf City, Sunday evenings at Turf City has developed its own core group of participants.

At the end of May 2009, I considered alternating the weekend evening session at Turf City between Saturday and Sunday to see which was more popular, but Sunday has clearly been more popular.

Instead, since 1 August 2009, we have had a Saturday evening session at Sports Planet, except it was switched to The Cage on 12 September 2009 in order to get enough players, and again yesterday, as no pitch was available at Sports Planet.

Since the end of May 2009, the weekend sessions have had a separate scheduling post.

Weekend sessions have clearly grown in popularity. They have also attracted a lot of new participants.
