More On 11-A-Side Games

Apparently entirely coincidentally, three different people raised the prospect of an 11-a-side game with me or on the blog yesterday.

We played our first 11-a-side game almost a year ago, on Saturday, 10 May 2008.  James L, the captain of our opponents, SMSed me yesterday afternoon as follows:

We played against ur team once at tampines safra. U keen to have another game, towards [the] end of [the] month?

Earlier yesterday afternoon, Benjamin had SMSed as follows:

my co team is interested to play 11 a side …. Can u help post an interest for 10 may sunday? Will need to book field and get ref. To share cost.

Later yesterday, Yuchi commented on the blog on whether anyone would be interested to play an 11-a-side at Tampines SAFRA in the afternoon of 25 April 2009 instead of the 7 or 8-a-side proposed for that afternoon at Turf City.

I understand Yuchi can get the 11-a-side pitch at Tampines SAFRA for certain dates/times.

As I’ve said before, I’m not too keen to be involved in organizing 11-a-side games against other opponents, as it adds to the work I already do in organizing regular sessions and futsal games, but I’m happy to lend support to anyone using the blog to organize an 11-a-side team/match.

We’ve been involved in three other 11-a-side games since our first one:

The last two matches were arranged entirely by Andy M liaising with Steve F’s team (for which I understand Andy M plays for regularly as well).

As it is coming up to one year since our first 11-a-side game, I might be prepared to do a bit more this time round.  I e-mailed James L and Yuchi last night to see if they are able to arrange a match on Saturday, 25 April 2009.  I separately e-mailed Benjamin and Yuchi to see if they are able to arrange a match on Sunday, 10 May 2009.

In fact, if there is sufficient interest, and the necessary arrangements can be made, we could even have two matches.

As is often the way, a poll to canvass views: (Note: James has since come back to say they can’t do 25 April 2009. The alternative date is Saturday, 16 May 2009. The poll has been amended accordingly. See Comment 3 below.)

[poll]

(See Comment 12 below).

Those of you who can commit to either or both days, please add your comments below.

Hi Jiv, my firm is ok for 9 May Sat as well. We need to get this up soon to plan the booking and referee cos our firm need to plan out a run of games for the upcoming inter firm games.

    Thx.

Ok Benjamin, I think Saturday (9 May) will work better than Sunday (10 May), but I’ll need until at least next Friday to allow time for responses.

If your team finds another opponent before then, go ahead with a match against them.

I’m putting up the 25th April slot again if anyone is interested to play against one of my church teams. Details are:

    Date: 25 April 2009, Saturday
    Kick-off: 315pm
Venue: East Spring Secondary School (Tampines)[REAL grass]
Cost: $60 split among whoever turns up

Mark L and I both play for this church team, so if someone could coordinate for FIOFAFI, that would be great, otherwise Mark L will help organise.

Kevin, I also received an SMS from Mark this morning.

Mark’s suggestion of an 11-a-side against his church team last April led to our first 11-a-side game in May.

We now have three proposals for an 11-a-side game:

    • Saturday, 25 April 2009, at 3 pm, in Tampines, against Kevin/Mark’s church team.
    • Saturday, 9 May 2009, against Benjamin’s company team. Time and venue to be fixed.
    • Saturday, 16 May 2009, against James’s team. Time and venue to be fixed.

Late Saturday afternoon has worked well for our last three 11-a-side games, so I’d suggest we stick to that for the proposals where time and venue has yet to be fixed. The venue is likely to be in the east.

We can do one, two or all three games, as long as we have sufficient numbers of players. Rajseran, Yaseen, Chris, Luke, Joel, Tim and Clement have indicated interest. Let me know for how many of the proposed matches. Mark L, Benjamin, which side will you be playing with?

Anyone else? Responses below please. I’d like to have a sense of the numbers we have by this week.

Like I said, I’m only getting involved in this to mark one year since our first 11-a-side game, otherwise, I’d leave it to those proposing the game to organize it themselves through the blog. 🙂

As the poll doesn’t make sense any more, I’ve taken it out of the post above.

      Hi Rajiv,

Just to add that if needed, the church team can bolster the FIOFAFI numbers. We have a large squad and I’m sure some of my guys won’t mind playing with FIOFAFI so that they can get more minutes during the game.

Mark L will play for the church side.

Hi Andy M, do you mind coordinating for the FIOFAFI side for the 25 Apr game, since you have had a hand in managing past 11-a-sides? Would really appreciate it.

    Mon 13 April 2009 at 4:26 pm

For 25 Apr game, I’m not playing due to clash with firm’s team playing another friendly.
For 9 May game, I’ll be playing with my firm.
For 16 May game, I’ll be playing in FIOFAFI team.

    Hi

Rajseran, Yaseen, Chris, Luke, Joel, Tim, Clement, Andy M.
8 Pax in total POTENTIALLY for the Friendly next Sat against Kevins church team.
Spoke with Kevin today… if there is insufficient interest from Fiofafi, he will start to look for alternative opponents, and i think by tomorrow he will need to contact people… So if you are interested, can confirm please?

Thanks Rajiv. I could wait until this Sat for the numbers to be firmed up. At least 10 from FIOFAFI will be good. We could supply up to 5 at max from my side if the need arises.

      Thu 16 April 2009 at 10:29 am

I’m taking a while to recover fully from injuries and minor illnesses. Must be an age thing. 🙂 I haven’t played since the 7-a-side game on 28 March 2009.

I’ll try to play a regular session next week and see how that goes.

  17. rajiv
    Thu 16 April 2009 at 10:33 am

I think we should have more than 10 for 25 April 2009. There are a few who are away, but should be back next week, and who’d be interested. Plus a few of your players, we should have enough.

The bigger question is whether we have enough interest for three 11-a-side games over 4 weeks. A reminder that the other two proposed matches are:

    • Saturday, 9 May 2009, against Benjamin’s company team. Time and venue to be fixed.
    • Saturday, 16 May 2009, against James’s team. Time and venue to be fixed.

For the other two, we’ll need at least 16.

Everyone, please confirm which of the three you can make.

Joel, I see that you’re on for the 11-a-side on 9 May. This is against Ben’s company team.

There are three 11-a-side matches proposed. The proposed match on 25 April looks the most likely. I’m not sure about the other two 11-a-side games proposed for 9 and 16 May. Three in four weeks is very unlikely for a FIOFAFI team.

You’d previously spoken to me about having an 11-a-side match against your bank’s team.

Would you be interested in putting together your bank’s team to play against Ben’s company team on either 9 or 10 May?

Yuchi is connected to SAFRA Tampines, so he might be able to help you get the pitch there. Otherwise, there should be other pitches available. There are “brokers” who have several school fields available. Damian, Andy M or Kevin might have the contact details for such “brokers”.

I’ve just been reminded that 9 May 2009 is Vesak Day.

I’ll leave it to the two sides to decide whether they want a match against each other, and if so, on which date.

I think we can confirm the match on 25 April. Even if a couple drop out, I expect we’ll have a few more by the end of next week. Plus a few of your players if necessary.

I’ve added it to the “Other Activities” page.
