Monday Night At Turf City: 6 April 2009

It was a surreal feeling to be back at the Premier Pitch after all this time. Everything was exactly where it had always been minus the large LCD TV that used to be showing EPL suspiciously missing.

We started with a full team:

  • Blacks: Sushil, Damian, Edardy, Jujing, Clement
  • Reds: Bobby, Tom, Shankar, George, Charles

Sushil had a case of food poisoning and had to sit out the game. On the side – Iif he had “Rojak” from the Geylang Serai food centre, I hope that he seeks medical help real soon given that someone had died from eating there. He was replaced by a guy who works at The Pitch.

It was an evenly contested match for the first 20 or so minutes with both teams attacking and defending well. There was little between the teams in terms of goal difference maybe 2 or 3 goals at the most. But that was soon all to change.

Charles, citing lack of stamina as a reason, decided to sit out after playing about 25 mins and Sushil’s replacement from the management followed after him. Then it was 4 on 4 for the better part of 30 mins.

The blacks were down by several goals by this time and they put up a good fight in getting back one goal at a time. Edardy held the ball well while Clement and Damian kept running into space. The Reds were stretched trying to contain the non stop running from the blacks.

But the incessant attacks of the black team left them vulnerable at the back and the reds made advantage of it with quick counter attacks with George leading the charge. Bobby and Tom combined well to get a few goals in from the flanks and from the middle of the park.

The game eventually ended in favour of the reds with the actual number of goals scored becoming more and more insignificant and the game wore on. Well, truth be told everyone was so knackered running around that we literally forgot the score.

It was a good game and in my opinion, it was the first game in a long time where winning did not take center stage. Playing the game did. Well done guys.

Thanks Shankar. As you’ll see, I’ve replaced the contents of the above post with your report.

I understand it finished 12-4 to Reds.

Although it doesn’t really make any difference, the score was more like 12-6. It was 6-4 before the Reds pull away due to poor defending(or no defending) by the Blacks.

Will try to be back to Turf City whenever I am not travelling.

Hi Shankar, I must say it was a neat report and I like to apologize to everyone for dropping out after 25 mins. To be honest, I felt like fainting, breathing heavily but yet still grasping for air! For those who played with me before during those SMU days, I never ever drop out half way during a game, but considering this is my first game after what 5 years? To run 25 mins and scored 2 goals I couldn’t ask for more 🙂

I put in one vote for Bobby who was great in goal and for doing a pinpoint lob cross for me to head one in (been a long time I score from a header). Tom & Clement, great to see you guys still full of running and finally my buddy George who I suspect wants to kill me for inviting me to the game haha..(joking).

Hi Rajiv, I’m impressed with this set-up! This is 1000% more professional than previously. Conglads again, best wishes and happy scoring!

Thanks Charles. Play whenever you like. Just confirm on the blog for the sessions you want to play.

I might try a less demanding session for us older guys, but it’s most likely to be the second session at The Cage on Wednesday.
