Playing On Two Pitches On The Same Night

Two sessions have been scheduled for Monday, 6 April 2009 – one at The Premier Pitch at Turf City in Bukit Timah, and the other at The Cage in Kallang.

We have played on two pitches on the same night and at the same time (9 to 10 pm) on the following occasions so far:

We also had two games on 23 December 2008, when we played against The Cage management from 8 to 9 pm, before our regular session from 9 to 10 pm.

Where we have more than 10 participants confirming for a single session, we have had a priority system in place since late June 2008 to determine which 10 play.

We can manage with 8 at The Cage, and up to 12 at certain other venues.

However, if we get towards 20 participants confirming, there is the option of having two sessions at the same time, subject to the availability of a second pitch.

If both sessions are at The Cage, we can manage with just 16.  If only one session is at The Cage, we need at least 18.  If neither session is at The Cage, we’d need 20.

If both sessions are at the same venue, we could either have two separate sessions, or a mini-tournament.

Having two sessions at different venues is trickier.  Not only do I need to make sure that there are sufficient numbers at both venues, the players must make sure they go to the correct venue.

If one of the venues is oversubscribed and the other is undersubscribed, I’ll ask those who are down for the oversubscribed venue, especially those who have played at the other venue before, whether they can switch.

As The Cage and Sports Planet are relatively close to each other, it was not too difficult getting players to switch from the oversubscribed venue to the under-subscribed venue.   As Sports Planet lies south-east of The Cage, I did consider giving priority for The Cage to those living west or north of The Cage, while giving priority for Sports Planet to those living east or south or The Cage.  However, I would need to know whether everyone lives, which I don’t.

Getting numbers right between The Premier Pitch and The Cage will be trickier, as there are more who can or will only play at one venue but not the other.

We’ll see how it goes for Monday.

In the alternative to both sessions being from 9 to 10 pm, we have considered having one of the two sessions earlier (8 to 9 pm) or later (10 to 11 pm).  We need a sufficient pool of participants interested in those time slots to make them viable.

If we do ever have consecutive sessions on the same night at the same venue, and if any of the players were prepared to play both sessions, it would allow even greater flexibility with the numbers.

If one of the sessions run from 10 – 11pm, you know who to put down for it ;o)

When Tom took over organizing the Monday night game at Turf City in May, I said I wouldn’t schedule a second Monday night session for the time being.

The second session tomorrow night is a one-off, as there were several players who wanted to play on Monday who couldn’t get a game at Turf City as it was full.

For now, I will only organize a second session for Monday night if the Turf City game is full, and there are several more who want to play on Monday nights, so the Monday night game at Turf City will continue to get the first pick of players.

We played on two pitches at the same time twice this week, on Monday and Thursday. We’ve now managed that 5 times in total since the first time on 26 March 2009:

Thursday, 26 March 2009: One session at Sports Planet, the other at The Cage, both at 9.00 pm. A second session took place at The Cage as the session at Sports Planet filled up and a lot more wanted to play.

Monday, 6 April 2009: One session at The Cage, the other at Turf City, both at 9.00 pm. Two sessions were scheduled to meet an increase in demand for Monday night football.

Wednesday, 1 July 2009: One session at Sports Planet, the other at The Cage, both at 9.00 pm. As a pitch was not available on Thursday, two sessions were scheduled for Wednesday.

    • Monday, 17 August 2009: The FAFI game at Turf City, and an extra session at Sports Planet, both at 9.00 pm. As there were several players on in reserve for the FAFI game, an extra session was arranged at Sports Planet.

    • Thursday, 20 August 2009: One session at Sports Planet, the other at The Cage, both at 9.00 pm. As a pitch was not available on Wednesday, two sessions were scheduled for Thursday.

Two sessions at the same time but at different venues has become very manageable.

When we’ve played two pitches at the same time and at the same venue, we’ve been having mini-tournaments.

If we had had enough players yesterday, I would have tried for our second mini knock-out tournament.

As Poh Keng said after the last mini-league tournament on 4 August 2009:

The mini tournament is quite exciting n energy-sapping which we want to achieve.

    In response, I said:

If we have 20 for a night, and two pitches, we can do either a mini-tournament (mini-league or knock-out), or just have two separate sessions.

Mini-tournaments are a good way for everyone to meet each other. On the other hand, I wouldn’t want to have them too often – apart from requiring more work, the novelty will wear off.

If we have two separate sessions at the same time and at the same venue, one could be a more competitive session for the more experienced/better participants and those who enjoy the greater competition, and a less competitive session for those who want a more relaxed game or who are less experienced/newer.

I’ll come back to this later this month.

If we have two separate sessions instead of a mini-tournament, we could have an “A” session and “B” session. My inclination is to allow each participant to choose which session he wants to play in. However, if one is oversubscribed and the other is under-subscribed, other ways of deciding who should move from the oversubscribed session to the under-subscribed session could include:

    • more regular players in the “A” session.
    • players higher up the table in the “A” session.

Even if we have “A” and “B” sessions instead of a mini-tournament, the points will be along the lines of a mini-tournament:

    For the “A” session:
    • 2 points for a win.
    • 1.67 points for a draw.
    • 1.33 points for a loss.

    For the “B” session:
    • 1.67 points for a win.
    • 1.33 points for a draw.
    • 1 point for a loss (participation point).
