Saturday 7-A-Side At The Premier Pitch: 28 March 2009

We had 8 at the Premier Pitch yesterday afternoon – Yuchi, Murray, Jujing, Mark C, Rajiv, Alan, Rizal and Mark’s friend Ryan.

Only 5 of Dennis’s team were there at 5 pm, so I went into goal for them, and we started with our 7 against 6.  We created a few chances, but unfortunately, I had my best spell of the match in their goal, and the score remained 0-0.

Their remaining two players arrived at about 5.15 pm, so I returned to our  side.  We continued 7 v 7, with we having a rolling sub.

Although we had a lot of possession, Dennis’s team went 6-0 up with some slick passing and movement before Ryan got our only game of the game.

We then tightened up our defence and the score remained 6-1 until close to 6 pm.  The Premier Pitch gave us an extra half hour, so we continued until 6.30 pm.  As fatigue and injuries got the better of us, Dennis’s team extended their lead.  The final score was 11-1.

Murray had a sprained left wrist from Thursday’s session, and a shot that hit the wrist aggravated it.  Murray had another appointment and left shortly after, just before 6 pm.

At about 6.15 pm, while in goal, I saw a pile driver very late and it caught my left wrist, spraining it.  The shot hit the post and fell to an opposing player, who had a simple tap in.

Dennis’ team clearly benefited from playing together regularly.  They knew almost instinctively where to find their team mates.  They also played futsal the way it should be played, with quick one or two-touch passing. Their players were also all in the late 20s, so on average, much younger than us.

Most of our players were meeting each other for the first time.  Although we had a lot of potential, we were over-elaborate early on.   Later in the game, we were let down by the final pass, touch, or shot, especially as fatigue got the better of us.

All in all, a tough game, but a good lesson on how futsal should be played.

As the line ups were not based on the rankings, it goes down as an unranked game.

We could have a re-match, but before then, I think we should try a 7 or 8-a-side game amongst ourselves first, so that we get a better hang of it.

I think once a month, on a weekend afternoon, might work.  Two questions:

  • Is there a preference for a Saturday or Sunday afternoon?
  • As many of us may have plans for later in the evening, would it be better to have it earlier, say 4 to 5 pm?  Of course, it will be warmer, but the pitches are covered.

As is the way on FIOFAFI, a couple of polls to try to answer these questions:

Thanks everyone who played. Speedy recovery to those who got injured.

      Thanks Dennis.

Would you like to be added to the Participant List? When a FIOFAFI team plays against another team, I usually don’t add the players on the opposing side to the Participant List, but as you found us through the blog, and have commented on the blog, I could do so.

As I’ve said elsewhere, commenting on the blog is also “participating”. 🙂

I think we’ll try an intra-FIOFAFI 7 or 8-a-side game at The Premier Pitch towards the end of this month.

As the voting is currently 6 to 2 in favour of Saturday afternoon over Sunday afternoon, I propose that it take place on Saturday, 25 April 2009.

At present, it is 4 votes each between a 4 pm start and a 5 pm start. Whether it is a 4 pm or 5 pm start will depend on which is ahead in the voting closer to the date.
