Playing To Time Or “Last Goal”?

The issue of playing on until a last goal has come up a couple of times in the past few weeks:

Sushil, Shankar, Mark L, Nick and Chris all played in both games.  Nick lost out on both occasions, while Shankar benefited on both occasions.  Sushil, Mark L and Chris each benefited once, and lost out once.

Stopping as soon as time is called can seem very abrupt.  On the other hand, playing on until a “last goal” can prolong the game indefinitely.

Also, in a closely-contested game that is level when time is called, playing on to the last goal seems too much like “sudden death”.   For me, it’s only fair in such a closely-contested game that all the players get a point for the rankings, rather than using “sudden death” to decide which team will get 3 points, leaving the other team with no points.  Further, for me at least, “sudden death” is more closely associated with American sport rather than British sport, and you know where my preferences lie.

My own inclination is to play on until the ball goes dead, that is, the ball is out of play or is in a goalkeeper’s hands, or a goal is scored. If a foul is committed and a free kick taken, I’d be minded to continue until the ball goes dead as described above.  Ending a game once a foul is committed just doesn’t seem right. 🙂

Like I’ve said before, it’s the 10 who are playing who decide.  However, there’s never any harm in canvassing views through a poll. 🙂

What happened yesterday happened, there’s no changing that. 🙂

This is only for future reference.

If there is another team waiting to come on the pitch, it’s a bit unfair to make them wait no?

Well, there’s always a couple of minutes give-and-take. And the clock at each pitch at The Cage is different, sometimes by up to 6 or 7 minutes! I’ve noticed that on the other hand, there aren’t any clocks at Sports Planet.

But you’re right Andy, the poll should only apply to when there isn’t another group waiting to play, which isn’t all that uncommon at 10 pm at either The Cage or Sports Planet.

Hi Rajiv, i have a suggestion and can you do a poll to see how many are in favour of this.
Each time there is a draw in FIOFAFI games, the natural outcome would be to play till ball is out or last goal as suggested by some. My proposal is to have a sudden death or 3 spot kicks to be taken immediately once the announcement is made by the management in the event of a draw. In this way, there will be a clear winner. At the end of the spot kicks if its still a draw then it will go down as a draw. I am sure it will at more spice to the game. Moreover spot kicks can be taken at a shorter time then playing the last goal rule(sometimes).. Tell me whats your view on this. Thanks 😉

      Too American. 😉

I prefer football leagues like those in England and Europe (and notwithstanding the “below par standards”, even the S. League), draws are part of life. And part of FIOFAFI’s “balanced and healthy perspective on sport and competition”. 🙂

Anyway, it would be tough to continue for that long especially when the next lot are waiting for their turn.

The poll above shows that even “last goal” is not popular (only 17%). The real contest is between ending immediately when time is called (42%) or continuing until the ball goes dead (42%). I don’t think we need another poll at the present time.

    Poll results:

    A regular FIOFAFI session should

    • come to an end immediately when time is called 43% (6 votes)
    • continue until the ball goes dead after time is called 43% (6 votes)
    • continue until a “last goal” after time is called 14% (2 votes)
