Zaijian Reza. Ma’a Salamah Boris.

Rez is off to HK for a stint next week and Boris is jetting off to romance Jordanian beauties soon as well so this “non-rank” game was dedicated to them. Unlike the usual testimonials where the departing player pockets the stadium revenues, this one was done FIOFAFI style with Rez paying for the entire game– thanks Rez J.

With some absentees and no pre-set line ups, the teams were called on the spot. After signing autographs and posing for pictures with the fans, the players took the field as follows:

Team White (TW):  Reza, Andy M, Jonathan, Joel and Melvin
Team Non White (TNW):  Boris, John S, Tim, Bret

That’s right – it was the first ever 5 vs 3.5 game in FIOFAFI’s history with Half Lung Bret only counting for half. Due to the numerical advantage, TW could score from only within the Dee (later amended to the area beyond the penalty spot). The game started out tight n tentative as always – chances were few but TNW sneaked ahead to 2-0 lead. TW pulled level and thereafter began a cagey period of thrust and counter thrust from each team – from 2-2 to 3-2, 2-3, 4-3, 4-4 and so on till 6-6 with about 20 min to go – there never was more than a goal in it.

TW never really made their numerical advantage count – there was plenty of passing, one twos and attacking play from them but somehow their play in the final third and overall finishing let them down. With the exception of the indefatigable Boris, the other members of TNW were clearly tiring and taking turns in goal. But somehow it was the 3.5 men of TNW that found their second wind in the last quarter and took the initiative. Inspired by a mesmeric mazy run (that would have made Giggs proud) leading to a wonderful solo goal by Boris, TNW rallied and pulled ahead to finally win 10-6 or 11-7. Special mention to Boris whose countless twists and turns would have put John “Sat Nite Fever” Travolta to shame and his wonder goal.

On a personal note, Half Lung Bret was happy to end a 6 match losing streak – alas and woe, it was a non rank game.

After the game, we walked over to Brewerkz by the river for jugfuls of beer – Rajiv joined us there, as did Sarah along with her and Andy’s 6 month old pup, the ever playful Zak. Burp.

Pictures up on the Facebook page.

Farewell Reza and Boris.

C’mon Bret, not all that final 🙂 – Boris is around for another week or two, while I’m sure Reza will be back, maybe as soon as next week, before he finally starts his stint in Hong Kong.

And they can always still post or comment on the blog.

    PS. Not really absentees.

3.5 my foot. If it wasn’t for Bret we would have conceded a lot more goals. Got in a lot of very good and clean tackles to get the ball away from TNW’s goal. Oh and he scored a really nice goal too.

    Great game all round.

I think TW didnt really utilise the extra man advantage to the full- too often, we had two players making the same run into the box and it’s easy to be complacent when you have that advantage- after half an hour, I thought we were well in front but it seems like we didnt capitalise on all our chances. Full credit to TNW for their trojan efforts – a well deserved win.

For the record, I had a penalty saved and I also missed an open goal with the last kick of the game!

I need to correct you, Bret. If you have only half a lung your team should count as 3.25 and not 3.5

Reza, if you send me Tim’s e-mail address, I’ll add him to the e-mail Updates and Extras.
