Double Bill

Wed 11 February 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

We have two simultaneous sessions from 9 to 10 pm at The Cage tonight.

The only other time we had two sessions on the same night and at the same time was also on a Wednesday (14 January 2009), when in addition to our regular session, we had our one and only mixed session to date, also both at The Cage.

The reason we’re having two sessions tonight is that after the one session originally scheduled for tonight had filled up, several more wanted to play.

There are two ways I can decide the line ups for tonight after the players have been listed in order of rankings:
Method 1:

  • Game 1:
    • Team A – 1st, 8th, 9th, 16th, 17th
    • Team B- 2nd, 7th, 10th, 15th, 18th
  • Game 2:
    • Team C – 3rd, 6th, 11th, 14th, 19th
    • Team D – 4th, 5th, 12th, 13th, 20th

Method 2:

  • Game 1:
    • Team A – 1st, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th
    • Team B- 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th
  • Game 2:
    • Team C – 11th, 14th, 15th, 18th, 19th
    • Team D – 12th, 13th, 16th, 17th, 20th

In Method 1, both games are treated equally.  In Method 2, Game 1 will, on the face of it, be stronger than Game 2, but both games should be even within themselves.

For tonight, I don’t think I’ll use either of the above methods.  Instead, I will divide the players into two groups of 10, trying to keep each player in the same group as his introducer (wherever applicable).  I’ll fill in the rest according to the order in which they confirmed.  Once the two groups are formed, I’ll do the line ups in the usual way for each group.

We presently have 17 confirmations.   If we can’t get more than 18, we could have one game as 5 v 5 and the other as 4 v 4.  Anyone who only wants to play in a 5 v 5, please say so in a comment below.  If you don’t say anything, I’ll assume you’re open to either, so it will be a matter of luck which group you fall into.  And don’t forget to vote in the poll!

For the future, if we have two sessions on the same night, I’d rather have them at different venues or at different times, so that it gives everyone more choice either in terms of venue or time.

Alternatively, if both sessions are at the same venue and at the same time, I’ll distinguish one of them in some way, for example, as a mixed session or an over-40s session.
