Four Days A Week And An Extra Hour

Tue 3 February 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

As previously stated:

I aim to maintain at least 4 regular sessions a week (Monday to Thursday) for the foreseeable future. The idea is that for any working day (other than Friday), if you really want to play, there is a session somewhere in Singapore you can join after work, provided you confirm early enough.

I first scheduled four sessions in a week for the first week of August 2008. However, up to the end of October 2008, often one of the four scheduled sessions would be cancelled due to insufficient numbers.  However, we have more or less sustained at least four sessions a week since early November 2008.

Even discounting the Sunday sessions at FICO (which were more in the nature of ad hoc sessions for Franco’s colleagues), we managed five sessions in the week of 12 January 2009.  In that week, we had two simultaneous sessions from 9 to 10 pm on Wednesday at The Cage, one a regular session and the other a mixed session.

The one ad hoc session that we had on a weekday night was our one-off game against The Cage management on 23 December 2008.

I am looking at having 5 regular sessions a week from next week onwards.   If those who want to play more sessions a week get to play, and those coming back after a break play, we should easily fill all 5 sessions.

For next week, in additional to the usual four sessions (Monday to Wednesday at the Cage, and Thursday at Sports Planet @ East Coast, all from 9 to 10 pm), the fifth session will be on Thursday, 9 to 10 pm, at The Cage.  The reasons for it being on Thursday at The Cage are as follows:

  • We will have a session at The Cage every night from Monday to Thursday, which will form the base for the regular sessions
  • If we later go to a sixth session, it will be on Mondays at The Premier Pitch at Turf City (after it re-opens).  This will give us a good Monday-Thursday split for the days with two sessions.
  • Having the extra session on the last of the four days acts as a catch all for everyone who wants a game but can’t get one earlier in the week, or who want an extra game.

If having two sessions on Thursdays doesn’t work out, I’ll try other days of the week in subsequent weeks.

The more important issue is what time the second session should be.  My view is as follows:

  • I am not keen on 8 to 9 pm as there is a greater risk of late-coming.  We start our sessions on time.
  • Having it from 9 to 10 pm means getting 20 players for the same hour.  Tough.
  • 10 to 11 pm might work.  Kevin is keen.  It really depends how a later start affects your sleep.

I’d even be prepared to consider morning sessions before work – 7 to 8 am.  The risk of latecoming or non-attendance due to oversleeping is high though.  I would need to know that we had a sufficient pool of reliable participants keen to play in the early morning.

For now, I’ll limit the options to night sessions.  To assess views, please vote below.

Reza is scheduled to be transferred to Hong Kong for a while, and he sent me an e-mail this morning to to say that next week will be his last week of FIOFAFI for quite a while. He asked if we could have a game made up of an “invitational 5” next Tuesday.

He has lined up Bret, Joel and John S, as well as two other friends, Jonathan and Tim.

I’m looking at having the night next week with two sessions changed from Thursday to Tuesday, which means we will have two sessions at The Cage on Tuesday, both from 9 to 10 pm.

Further details will be posted tomorrow morning as part of next week’s schedule. The schedule is likely to come out later in the morning, after I confirm the change in bookings.

Maybe you could try considering shifting one of the Tuesday matches to 10pm in case there aren’t enough people? Ideally, I would like to play in both. 🙂

There are not enough participants interested in a 10 to 11 pm slot. I might gain a couple of players if I move one of the sessions, but I might well lose 3 or 4 others.

    In the future, maybe.

Oh ok. I was just talking bout next week though. Never mind then.

I know, so was I. 🙂 Or whenever there are 2 sessions fixed for the same time at the same venue.

Russell replied to my SMS today to say “I like the football but the 10 pm ending is tough”.

Fair enough, but the best way to have your views taken into account is to comment on the blog and vote in the polls.

I haven’t ruled out an 8 to 9 pm session weekday nights, and games at the weekend will increasingly become available, first on Saturday afternoons but I haven’t ruled out other times or Sunday either.

It all depends on the numbers.

7 votes (64%) for sticking with the 9 to 10 pm time slot.

Only 2 voters (22%) would be interested in a 10 to 11 pm time slot. Clearly not enough to get one going.

Likewise, only 2 votes (22%) keen on a 8 to 9 pm time slot. Again, clearly not enough to get one going.
