The Weekly Schedule

Timing of each week’s schedule

Since the end of June 2008, the following week’s schedule has been posted by Wednesday of each week.

Before that, the following week’s schedule used to come out on Wednesday or Thursday.

One reason I started putting the schedule up by Wednesday was to allow everyone more time to confirm for the following week’s session(s) of their choice, especially when everyone was still familiarising themselves with the system.

However, one downside of putting up the schedule early is that there are more likely to be subsequent changes to the confirmations, especially since a lot of people only really decide at the weekend what they are going to do the following week. More subsequent changes means more work for me.

Now that most people are familiar with the system, from this week onwards, the following week’s schedule will only come out on Thursday mornings. Those who are newer will pick it up as they go along. Therefore, next week’s schedule will only come out tomorrow. Only if the following Monday is a public holiday will the schedule come out on Wednesday.

Confirming for sessions

If you want to play on a particular day in the following week, confirm early. If you are happy to play on any day, feel free to leave it for later. In any event, please try to confirm at least two days before the session. If you confirm at least one day before the session, you may still benefit from the priority system.

If you can make more than one session, but prefer to play only one or not to play all of them, specify the one(s) you prefer, and state which other ones you can make, so that if any of the one(s) you prefer to play are full or cancelled, I’ll try to slot you into any other session you can make, applying the priority system where appropriate.

It makes sense to confirm for a session that still has places available, rather than one that is already full.  However, even if a session is full, places do sometimes become available on or before the day of the session itself, so if you can only play on that day, please confirm for that session as usual, and I’ll let you know if a place becomes available.

All confirmations and subsequent withdrawals should be on the blog.  If you can’t access the blog from work, please do so outside of work.  Only if the withdrawal is on the day of the session itself, please SMS me in addition to doing so on the blog.  If at the time you know you have to withdraw, you won’t have access to the blog for some time, you can e-mail or SMS me.

If having confirmed, you subsequently would like to change your choice of session or have to withdraw, please do so as soon as possible on the blog.  As I have said before:

… confirming carries a degree of commitment to turn up on time and play for the whole session.

I have no issue with anyone confirming for friends, including friends that they wish to introduce to FIOFAFI. However, the same consideration as to commitment applies.

I have been trying to cut down on the number of SMSs I send and receive.

The December 2008 holiday period and Chinese New Year public holidays were difficult, as numbers were very variable, as a result of people doing things away from their usual routines, and  especially where individuals’ plans can be fluid.

In future, I will only SMS if:

  • A session has 7 or 8 confirmations by a day or two before the session, and we need another 2 or 3 to get to 10.
  • Where one session is oversubscribed, while another is short of players, in order to see if anyone on the oversubscribed session can switch to the session that is short.
  • To find a replacement for a late withdrawal.

Otherwise, please keep everything on the blog.  It’s easier for me, and for everyone else.

I will only e-mail or SMS those who are new or haven’t played for a while a reminder in the afternoon of the session itself that the line ups and colours are under Current Schedule.

From this week onwards, there will be 3 posts to schedule the following week’s sessions/games:

Project FAFI post on Wednesday for the following Monday night at Turf City.

Regular week night sessions post on Thursday for regular sessions for the following Tuesday to Thursday nights, depending on availability of venues and participation trends.

    • Weekend sessions post in the middle of the week for proposed regular sessions at the weekend. It will take a while to figure out preferences, and to firm up venues and times. At present, I am looking at Saturday afternoon, 4 to 5 pm, and Sunday evening, 5 to 6 pm, at Sports Planet and/or Turf City.

      • The post for the Monday FAFI game will go up later on Wednesday or on Thursday.
      • The post for the following week’s routine mid-week sessions (Tuesday to Thursday) will go up on Friday.
