Schedule: Week Of 1 December 2008

Wed 26 November 2008 Leave a comment Go to comments

We’ve just about made 3 sessions this week, so we’ll stick with 3 sessions next week (unless more of the regulars are back from illness, injury, being away, other activities or rest, in which case, there the option of going to 4 sessions).  As matters stand, next week’s sessions are as follows:

  • Monday, 1 December 2008, 9 to 10 pm, The Premier Pitch (Turf City).
  • Wednesday, 3 December 2008, 9 to 10 pm, The Cage (Kallang).
  • Thursday, 4 December 2008, 9 to 10 pm, Sports Planet @ East Coast.

I have the bigger pitch at The Premier Pitch (at S$160), so we can go up to 16 on Monday.  However, we need at least 14.  If we don’t get 14 by the weekend, then it’ll be back to the smaller pitch.  If necessary, the priority system will apply.

10 for Wednesday and Thursday.

As always, all confirmations or any subsequent withdrawal as a comment below please. After you confirm, your confirmation should appear as a comment below.

Please specify both the day (Monday, Wednesday or Thursday) and the venue (The Premier Pitch, Sports Planet @ East Coast or The Cage) in your confirmation.

Thanks.

It looks like an awesome turnout for Monday.

Just remember, we are playing on the larger, Andy N-esque, pitch so prepare for more running, and all the other stuff that goes with it.

George, am still suffering from a sore ankle so am only 50-50 for Monday and don’t want to deprive others of a place. Will be on standby though.

Jiv, put me down for Wednesday at The Cage. Will withdraw gracefully if not ok by Tuesday.

Tom, Get Ian & Teck man

    Thanks, Gooner.

Re. Teik, I think prefers to play on the hard court of Bukit Timah. Something to do with the ball bouncing in a funny way on astroturf.

    Fri 28 November 2008 at 2:34 pm

Don’t worry about Monday Ian, there are likely to be a couple more. What happened to Kin? By the way, if you were playing, you and Tom would be team selectors, what with the extension of the one-fifth requirement to Monday nights.

Hi Rajiv, due to some change in schedule, I will probably be able to make it at the Premier Pitch tonight. Is the 1 spot still available?

  37. rajiv
    Mon 1 December 2008 at 9:12 am

    Update on this week’s schedule:

    • Tonight (1 Dec), 9 to 10 pm, The Premier Pitch (Turf City) – 15: Tom (7), Mark L (27), Yaseen (28), Bobby (11), Franco (33), Santi (14), Mark C (18), Gilbert (4), Clive (3), George (12), Kumar (1), Shankar (24), Damian (50), Rajseran (25), Kin (13), Kevin (45). FULL. Colours: Black, Red. With the one-fifth requirement, the team selectors are Tom and Gilbert. Line ups should appear this afternoon.

    • Wednesday, 3 December 2008, 9 to 10 pm, The Cage (Kallang) – 10: Bobby (11), Dirk (10), Philipp (21), Shankar (24), Andy N (47), Ladi (19), Mike A (54), Ian (8), Sam (6), me (29). FULL. Colours: White, Black.

    • An oversight – Sports Planet @ East Coast is not available on Thursday, 4 December 2008, 9 to 10 pm, so it’s at The Cage instead (9 to 10 pm). We have 10: Andy N (47), Kevin (45), Franco (33), Andy M (2), Gilbert (4), Kumar (1), Steve F (5), Reza (22), Ronak (55), Ladi (19). FULL. Colours: Red, White.

  38. Mon 1 December 2008 at 11:02 am

@Jiv, re. selection methodology. If I recall correctly, it goes like this:

    Team A: C1,3,6,7,10,11,14,15
    Team B: C2,4,5,8,9,12,13,16

This has the benefit that the captain (C1) for Team A has “first pick” (3). It follows with the captain of Team B (C2) picking the next two (4 and 5). And so it goes in turns.

This applies whether done “manually” between the two captains or via the rankings allocation.

However, consider this: Team A not only has the advantage of “first pick” but also the “advantage” of passing the “last pick” to Team B. Conversely, Team B has the disadvantage of picking second and picking last. Or, to put it in yet another way, the advantage of being captain of Team A is doubled.

May I propose, therefore, that the methodology is tweaked slightly to the following:

    Team A: C1,3,6,8,10,12,14,16
    Team B: C2,4,5,7,9,11,13,15

In this way, the captain of Team A still has the first pick (3). Captain of Team B has the slight disadvantage of going second but this is balanced by picking the next two players. After this, the captains take it in turns to pick one player at a time.

I think we both agree that no method is perfect, but let’s say that this might be less imperfect.

Alright, that’s about it for the proposal. Any comments or suggestions?

    Mon 1 December 2008 at 11:57 am

    Hi Rajiv,

I note that all the sessions are full this week, but if anyone drops out I’m keen to play, particularly on Wednesday.

    Thanks,
    John

  40. rajiv
    Mon 1 December 2008 at 12:06 pm

Ladi, as the last person to put yourself down for two sessions (one of which is Wednesday) this week, do you mind giving up your Wednesday place to John S?

    Thanks.

We’ll go back to 4 sessions in a fortnight’s time, so there’ll be more places then.

  41. rajiv
    Mon 1 December 2008 at 1:43 pm

Tom, for the original method, you have to look at each pair of selections (or assignments). For the first pair, the lower ranked selector goes first (or the next highest player is assigned to the lower ranked co-ordinator), but they take turns for each subsequent pair of selections (or assignments). That’s why it works out the way it does.

Who gets to pick first from the last pair depends on whether each team has an odd number or even number of players. I sometimes consider switching round the last pair for the reasons you have raised, but I don’t think it makes much difference.

For Mondays, where there is a selection by the selector, I’m happy to leave it to the two selectors to vary the method as they see fit. You have Gilbert’s number right?

  42. Kumar
    Mon 1 December 2008 at 2:21 pm

    Hi Rajiv,

Please count me out for Thurs. Sorry

  43. Mon 1 December 2008 at 2:26 pm

@ Jiv: I see what you mean, and you are right, the odd/even numbers also has an effect.

OK, anyway, Gilbert and I just did the selection based on yet another variation (!), taking into account the lower ranked fella / selector. We simply went Tom (7), Gilbert (4), Tom, Gilbert … etc. The resulting teams are:

Clive, Kevin, Kumar, Mark C, Santi, Shankar, Tom, Yasseen
Bobby, Damian, Franco, George, Gilbert, Kin, Mark L, Rajesh

and because of Mark L’s miserable track record in Black, and because Santi looks better in Black, Gilbert’s team gets to wear RED. Is it a coincidence that most of (all?) the Scousers are on one side?

  44. Franco
    Mon 1 December 2008 at 3:28 pm

could anybody please bring an additional red shirt for me tonight? I m coming direct from work and have no red with me as I m not a big supporter of any red colour team..;-)
Cheers Franco and see you tonight.

    Hi Rajiv,

Sorry long time no response from me. Thanks for keeping me in the loop. I would like to be counted in for either this week or next. Thats if you have any last minute drop outs.

Not 100% but I’ll hobble along.

  52. rajiv
    Wed 3 December 2008 at 4:01 pm

Line ups for tonight at The Cage, 9 to 10 pm:

    • White: Sam, Bobby, Ladi, Shankar, Andy N
    • Black: Dirk, Ian, John, Philipp, Mike A

Please be there by 8.45 pm, and use any waiting time to warm up!

I’ve left a ball at The Cage. If you need it, ask for the ball from Shan’s office – it’s got “FIOFAFI” stencilled on it. Of course, Ian might bring the ball he has, the player of the session from two week’s ago.

Shankar and Andy N, can you agree between yourselves for either of you to put up at least a session summary by tomorrow afternoon – line ups, final score, and player of the session poll. If you have the time or inclination to do a more detailed report, feel free to do so, either at the same time or later (by stating in the summary that a report will appear later, and amending the summary when you have the time to include a report). If you’re stopping at a summary, invite the other players to add their comments.

    Thanks.

  53. rajiv
    Wed 3 December 2008 at 6:16 pm

Andy N has volunteered to do the session report.

Andy, could you also pay S$80 at the desk at Pitch 3, and collect each person’s share from them? Thanks.

  54. rajiv
    Wed 3 December 2008 at 7:38 pm

Sam is out, so I’ll take his place tonight.

Nick, you can take my place tomorrow. Revised confirmations for tomorrow (4 Dec), 9 to 10 pm, The Cage (Kallang) – 10: Andy N (47), Kevin (45), Franco (33), Andy M (2), Gilbert (4), Steve F (5), Reza (22), Ronak (55), Ladi (19), Nick (-). Colours: Red, White.

  55. rajiv
    Thu 4 December 2008 at 4:15 pm

Line ups for tonight at The Cage, 9 to 10 pm:

    • Red: Andy M *, Ladi, Reza, Andy N, Ronak
    • White: Gilbert *, Steve F, Franco, Kevin, Nick

I forgot the team co-ordinators for last night. For tonight, they are Gilbert and Andy M – they can appoint either themselves or anyone else in the team to be captain, to decide player positions, and enhance communication within the team.

Please be there by 8.45 pm, and use any waiting time to warm up. One more time, it is at The Cage. For anyone who hasn’t been there before, there is a location map on the links to the right of the page.

I’ve been told it’s Pitch 2, but best re-confirm when you get there.

Andy M has the football, and Gilbert has another.

I might pop along to introduce Nick.

    Hi Rajiv

thanks for the invite last night really enjoyed myself, although I am sore as hell today and for some reason both my big toe nails have gone blue.

Would like to give Monday and Thursday a go if there are spaces, once the regulars have commited.

    Cheeres
