Another Hard Fought Draw

Thu 20 November 2008 Leave a comment Go to comments

After Tuesday night’s draw at The Cage, another draw last night at The Cage.

The sides finally lined up as follows:

  • Whites: Sam, Edardy *, me, John, Andy P
  • Blacks: Dirk *, Ian, Philipp, Llion, Mike A

Mike A was running late, so I stayed out to wait for him, and the teams started 4 v 4, with modified rules. After 20 minutes, the score was close, something like 3-2 to Blacks, or 3-3.

Mike and I joined the game, and the score was re-set to 0-0. Whites took a 3-1 lead, but Blacks pulled back to 3-3, and thereafter, there wasn’t more than a goal in it, all the way to 6-6, with Whites scoring the last goal to level the game.

Both sides kept their shape well, and there was a lot of quality running and passing. There were hardly any cheap or soft goals. Blacks hit the post a few times, while at the other end, Blacks’ keepers made several good saves.

Ian asked that the ball we played with (which he brought with him), be given an honourable mention.

As no one else who played last night has been added as an author yet, I’ve done a brief report, but everyone who played is welcome to write a more detailed or colourful account. If any of regulars open a WordPress account, I’ll add you as an author.

I thought it was a tough game for me. With Dirk, Philip and Llion running everywhere at all times and non-stop, positioning was vital in order to keep them from getting through. Even Sam, who can put a teenage sprinter to shame, out ran himself last night. The blacks had a very tight offensive strategy and did well keeping the whites in their half. But Andy, John and Sam did well with the quick breaks and counter attacks which resulted in the few goals scored. Rajiv contributed a few long range shots. Some ended up in the net while some hit the posts or were saved by the keeper. I think the whites fell into the trap of following the pace of the Blacks and was left gasping for breathe at the end of the game. Having said that, moments of clever positioning saved the whites and made them looked dangerous on the break. All in all, I enjoyed the game last night and I can tell that the pace is getting faster and harder. I have a feeling its not going to get easier from now on. Thanks guys for another thrilling episode.

Thanks Edardy, I thought Whites kept their shape pretty well last night. Either you or I were always at the back. Apart from the goals I scored, I don’t think I hit the post, although I went close a few times. I also set Andy P up a couple of times, one of which he missed, and the other, which he scored.

Dirk and Philipp were getting down the wings a lot, but I don’t think they got that many crosses in. Actually, I felt that because we were defending well, Blacks were forced to take long range shots, several of which went in, and several more of which hit the post. Of course, with Ian and Llion hovering around the Whites D, Blacks were always likely to get shots in on goal. Mike A proved to have a good long range shot, and to be good in goal.

Ian might credit the ball for the pace of the game. In fact, based on voting patterns so far, quite a few others have as well!

Edardy, you should consider giving up that pre-match cigarette to boost your game.

Cigs never harmed Berba. Then again, it probably explains a lot.

Thanks for the good work-out last night. I definitely need more of that in view of my sluggish movement off the ball (if there’s any at all!). I am also very rusty in terms of hitting the target, and probably need a few weeks of hard work to be able to make worthwhile contribution. Will be making more appearances from now on.

Edardy, that cigarette might have cost us the match. This game was one of the most tiring encounter for me. Imagine facing all the fast players > Dirk, Philip, Ian & “Lion”. It’s not an easy task..taking into account our team’s average age is around 40. However,I was happy with a draw. Winning will be a bonus.
