Venues In September & October 2008

Wed 27 August 2008 Leave a comment Go to comments

After we played at The Premier Pitch (at Turf City, the old Turf Club off Dunearn Road) on 28 July 2008 and 5 August 2008, Tom and Ian asked for a second regular session in the Bukit Timah area on Wednesdays or Thursdays, in addition to the regular Monday session at Bukit Timah campus.

I tried to book slots on Thursday nights at The Premier Pitch but Thursday nights were only available in October. In September, only slots on Wednesday nights were available, on 3, 17 and 24 September 2008.

Our pool of people isn’t large enough to sustain two separate sessions on a Wednesday night, so I will have to sacrifice the Wednesday night sessions at The Cage, which has remained popular.

However, I have noticed that several people who have been playing regularly at The Cage don’t actually live in the east, so playing in Bukit Timah shouldn’t be a problem for them.

For those who live in the east, you still have the option of Sports Planet @ East Coast on Tuesdays or Thursdays.

In October, the Premier Pitch sessions will move to Thursdays, and the Wednesday night sessions at The Cage will be re-instated.

    You’re welcome Tom.

Using the blog makes it easier to schedule and organize our regular sessions, and is also an fun way of reporting on our sessions, keeping records and developing other content.

It’s good that you and Ian have taken over the responsibility of booking the courts at Bukit Timah campus on Monday nights, as it spreads the work out.

In fact, anyone can book a slot that they prefer any night of the week or at the weekend at any venue, and put it forward to be filled on the blog.

Of course, it would not make sense to put forward a slot which clashes with an existing slot in the same vicinity.

As tonight’s session at The Cage is oversubscribed, while last Wednesday at The Premier Pitch was cancelled due to insufficient numbers (down to 4 at the end), I’ll keep the Wednesday sessions at The Cage, and start the Premier Pitch sessions on Thursdays.

However, the Premier Pitch is not available on Thursdays until October, so the next session there will be on 2 October 2008.

Ian spoke to me after Wednesday’s session at The Cage.

He observed that it might be difficult to get a second session going at a new venue in the Bukit Timah area unless people are familiar with the venue.

He suggested that as the Bukit Timah regulars are used to Monday nights, we switch the Monday night sessions to The Premier Pitch for a while to get the regulars used to the new venue.

Tom has booked Bukit Timah campus for Monday nights up to 22 September 2008.

I suggest that we switch the Monday night sessions to the Premier Pitch (9 to 10 pm) for a while from 29 September 2008 onwards (subject to availability).

We will also cap numbers at 10, as with The Cage and Sports Planet @ East Coast.

I haven’t played at Bukit Timah campus for a while as the hard court is bad for my knees.

If we switch to the Premier Pitch on Mondays from 29 September 2008, although I’m away on that day, I’ll play at the Premier Pitch on the following two Mondays, 5 and 12 October 2008.

I have been able to book Monday nights at The Premier Pitch from 9 to 10 pm for the whole of October.

So we will have 3 more sessions at Bukit Timah campus – 15, 22 and (subject to being booked) 29 September, before we switch Monday nights to The Premier Pitch for a while, starting from 6 October 2008.

Dennis, the switch to The Premier Pitch was arranged before we knew you were back.

Give it a go Dennis – one hour flat out, and no risk of it being rained out.

Playing at the Premier Pitch gives us the option of going 7 or 8-a-side on a bigger pitch. However, the bigger pitch is not available the rest of this month. However, if interest is high, I’ll see if I can get it for November. Two factors:

    • More space, so more team strategy and running required.
    • Works out to S$10 to S$12 per person, so slightly more expensive.

I have noticed that Wednesdays at The Cage is popular, while Tuesdays and Thursdays at East Coast have struggled to make 10. I’m not sure if it is the day of the week (Wednesday) or the venue (The Cage) which is popular, but one way to find out is to swap them around, so next week, Tuesday and Thursday will be at The Cage, while Wednesday will be at East Coast.

Are we ever going to go back to our original Bukit Timah campus playing gounds again, just out of curiosity?

It’s entirely up to those who play regularly at the Bukit Timah venues, but the last time we played at Bukit Timah campus, the attendance was dismal, while numbers have been a lot better at The Premier Pitch.

Also, if the aim is to continue playing for as long as possible, the astro turf at The Premier Pitch is a lot better for your knees than the hard court at Bukit Timah campus.
