Seven Days: 20 July 2009

Posted by rajiv on Mon 20 July 2009

A random sampling of sports results and news over seven days.

With less than a month to go before the new Premier League season kicks off, the pre-season friendlies are in full swing.

  • Friday, 17 July 2009
    • Bournemouth 0 Tottenham 3
    • St Pauli 3 Stoke 1
  • Saturday, 18 July 2009
    • Barnet 2 Arsenal 2
    • Gateshead 4 Sunderland 1
    • Malaysia XI 2 Man Utd 3
    • North Ferriby Utd 0 Hull 6
    • Orlando Pirates 2 Man City 0
    • Peterborough 0 Aston Villa 3
    • Rochdale 1 Everton 4
  • Sunday, 19 July 2009
    • Rapid Vienna 1 Liverpool 0

Sometimes, you wonder what’s the point of pre-season friendlies:

Sunderland defender Paul McShane will be out for at least three months after being told he needs knee surgery.

The Republic of Ireland international sustained the injury shortly after scoring in a 4-0 friendly win at Darlington on Thursday night.

On the other hand, it’s a chance for players who have out for a while with injuries, or who had a poor last season due to lack of form or injuries, such as Tomas Rocisky at Arsenal, or Michael Owen, now at Manchester United, to get in a few games before the start of the new season.

For the clubs that travel, it’s also a paid holiday. Apart from Manchester United and Liverpool in Asia, there is the Premier League Asia Trophy in China from 29 to 31 July 2009, where Hull City, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United will be joined by Chinese Super League club Beijing Guoan.

    More friendlies:

    L.A Galaxy 2 AC Milan 2

David Beckham was involved in an angry confrontation with Los Angeles Galaxy fans during his first home game since completing his loan spell at AC Milan.

The 34-year-old England midfielder missed the first half of the Major League Soccer season in order to play for the Serie A giants.

And he was jeered by sections of the sell-out crowd during Sunday’s friendly which was ironically against Milan.

    ….

Boos were louder than cheers as the players were introduced prior to kick-off and every touch from the former England captain was jeered early on by sections of the 27,000 sell-out crowd.

    ….

The match itself ended 2-2, Beckham doing his talking on the pitch by having a hand in both Galaxy goals.

    Shamrock 0 Real Madrid 1

On the 40th anniversary of man landing on the moon, Cristiano Ronaldo took his first small steps for Real Madrid in the Dublin foothills on Monday night. Wearing the No 9 jersey, the world’s most expensive player drew a capacity 11,000 fans to Tallaght Stadium ….

The 24-year-old Portugal winger was unleashed on the part-timers of Shamrock Rovers with all the force of a Saturn V rocket.

Operating wide on the right, …. Ronaldo darted about like a firefly [with a] repertoire of stepovers and fancy back heels. ….

Then, after 20 minutes, came his party piece, a free-kick for Real just outside the box. But he blasted his shot way off target, much to the undisguised merriment of the crowd. A few minutes later, to a backdrop of whistles and jeers, he had another free-kick, only this time he slammed his shot into the defensive wall. By half-time, Ronaldo was off, mission safely accomplished.

    ….

    More soap than sport.
