Posted by rajiv on Mon 6 July 2009

A random sampling of sports results and news over seven days.

At Wimbledon, Serena Williams wins the women’s singles while Roger Federer wins the men’s singles.

[He] beat Andy Roddick in five dramatic sets for a sixth Wimbledon and 15th major title.

The Swiss won 5-7 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 16-14 to surpass Pete Sampras’s 14 Grand Slam wins and regain the title he lost to Rafael Nadal last year.

The biennial Ashes starts on 8 July 2009, and continues to 20 September 2009.

Not much else happening in the world of sport.  Just over a month before the 2009 FA Community Shield on 8 August 2009, and the Premier League kicks off the 2009/10 season on 15 August 2009.

The Copa Libertadores Cup final will be played over two legs on 8 and 15 July 2009.

The 50th Copa Libertadores has not been a vintage edition.

South America’s premier club competition deserves better than some of the mediocre football that has been on show, especially in this anniversary year.

Perhaps the final can come to the rescue. To be played over two legs on 8 and 15 July, there are grounds for hoping that Estudiantes versus Cruzeiro will live in the memory for positive reasons.

Firstly, for only the 12th time in the competition’s history, it’s Argentina against Brazil in the final. Secondly, these are two teams that are taking good form into the clash. Cruzeiro of Brazil have gone seven games unbeaten in the competition, Estudiantes of Argentina have gone nine, and the last four of them have been victories.
