Geylang United

Geylang United is now officially the S. League team that FIOFAFI will be following this season.

Geylang United, nicknamed “The Eagles”, kick off their league campaign tonight, 7.45 pm, with a home game against Albirex Niigata at Bedok Stadium.

Geylang United have an experimental three-man coaching team.

After five seasons, where they’ve finished no better than sixth, the Eagles have turned to Lim Tong Hai, Mike Wong and Seak Poh Leong to guide the two-time SLeague champions (1996, 2001) back to the top of the table.

Director of coaching Poh Leong, a former Singapore skipper, holds the deciding vote to team matters when he is around, although most of the match-day duties will be administered by Lim and Wong.

Although Geylang United have a history behind them, no one can say we’ve adopted them because they’re successful!

Managing football teams by committee hardly ever proves successful, for example:

Things usually only get better when one man takes charge.

Hopefully, Geylang United’s “threesome” works out better than FIOFAFI’s own Bukit Timah triumvirate!

Wong said that one of Geylang’s problem was the high squad turnover in recent years.

Nine players left Bedok Stadium after the 2008 season, with as many new players arriving, including Canadian striker Rickey Marvin Harris.

“A good team needs to keep its core, like SAFFC, before it can turn into a strong side. We are hoping to do that,” said Wong, who hopes to retain 80 per cent of the Geylang squad for next season.

We’ll just have to wait and see how they do this season.

Geylang United got off to a winning start, overcoming Albirex Niigata 3-1 at Bedok Stadium last night.

Geylang United fell behind after 32 minutes, but a penalty in the 41st minute, and further goals in the 45th and 85th minutes saw Geylang triumph.

Geylang United’s result so far this season:

    • 17 Feb 09: Geylang United 3 Albirex Niigata 1
    • 28 Feb 09: SAFFC 2 Geylang United 0
    • 5 Mar 09: Sengkang Punggol 2 Geylang United 2

Not too bad a start to the season, even though they did throw away a 2 goal lead last night away to Sengkang Punggol.

Just over a week ago, I said:

Geylang United’s experimental three-man coaching team isn’t working. The lack of leadership on the pitch is symptomatic of the lack of leadership off it.

Yesterday, the Today paper reported that:

TONIGHT will be Mike Wong’s first match in charge as head coach of Geylang United,
when they host the Super Reds in a Great Eastern-Yeo’s S-League clash at Bedok Stadium.

Wong was previously part of a unique and controversial three-man coaching system, alongside Lim Tong Hai and Seak Poh Leong, but the trio were only in charge for six matches.

After collecting a meagre five points and currently sitting third from bottom, Wong, the former national women’s team coach, has been given the reins, with Lim appointed team manager and Seak the club’s technical adviser.

While Wong has assumed full control over training, Lim and Seak will still have input over team selection and tactics. Wong says the only surprise over the change was that it came so early.

He said yesterday: “Before the season started, management told me I had to take over the team sometime this year, or even at the end of the season. This just comes sooner than I expected. It’s not a surprise. I wanted to take over an S-League team so I am glad to have this opportunity.”

Wong insisted the coaching change was not as dramatic as many have made it out to be. “We are still on the same wavelength. It’s not about who calls the shots. It is still working,” he said.

The fact that Geylang have acted so swiftly to change their coaching system could mean added pressure on Wong.

But he said: “I’m not under pressure. Being a coach, having pressure is just part of the job. It’s not new to me because I went through it at the NFA (National Football Academy). Geylang knows what I need to do. I know what I want to do. They have not given me a time frame in terms of getting results.”

Wong’s contract runs out of the end of year and he has not discussed any changes with the management at this point.

In their last match, the Eagles suffered a bad defeat at the hands of Balestier Khalsa. But at training yesterday, the players seemed to be in a buoyant mood.

Geylang United won last night’s game 1-0.
